In 1940, Masaaki Takaoka works as a teacher in the agricultural division at a youth training institute. Although Japan’s defeat seems imminent, all of Masaaki’s students are drafted in a futile last-ditch effort. In an attempt to give the young men some hope, he makes everyone promise that they will all meet again under the cherry blossoms upon their safe return. Consumed by sadness over the fate of his students, Masaaki devotes the next 30 years of his life to develop a new species of cherry blossoms that could thrive in any climate in remembrance of his students.

This is the third time that Vik and his family have moved to a different city. Andrea, daughter of Glinda, who dresses like Ozma, accidentally sends Toto 2 to New York in a hot air balloon made by Frank, the Wizard's son. The other kids must follow the course set by Frank's computer to take them to him. When they arrive, their balloon is trashed, and they meet Rick, a homeless man who has adopted Toto. The strange appearance of some of the kids keeps plans to return from going smoothly, but are affected much more so by a clash of cultures.

This field trip seemed to be a good idea... Five days away from school, away from parents, in an organic farm, in order to enjoy the fresh air and initiate to ecology... But, in fact, everyone was a bit worried. Toto's parents, leaving their son for the first time ; Toto's teacher, at the idea of watching after him 24 hours a day ; and Toto himself, without the possibility of driving his parents nuts, without the neighbour's cat to torment, far away from the schoolyard... he was afraid to feel like time was dragging.
